Chinese New Year Benefit Concert and Auction
The Overseas China Education Foundation (OCEF) held its Chinese New Year's benefit concert and auction on February 22, 2013, at the Lincoln Center residence of Ms. Qi Xiaohong, Honorary Chair of the New York Chapter. Co-sponsored by a number of individuals and organizations, the event drew a crowd of nearly 200, and brought in more than $30,000 in donations and proceeds, all of which will be devoted to advancing rural education in impoverished regions in China. Among those in attendance were the Deputy Consul General of the People's Republic of China in New York, the president of the National Committee on US-China Relations, a representative from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Office, distinguished men and women of art and commerce, world-renowned scholars from area institutions of higher education, local Chinese community leaders, and others from all walks of life who are dedicated to philanthropy and rural education in China.
In her opening remarks, the hostess warmly welcomed the participants, thanked the co-sponsors, and shared her own journey and lasting bonds with OCEF. Other presenters included the president and CEO of OCEF, Ms. Wei Qinghong, and the New York Chapter Co-chairs, Nicole Li and David Cao. In addition to expressing their gratitude toward all contributors and volunteers who made the event possible, they reviewed OCEF’s achievements over the past 20 years and laid out its future plans. Through his representative, Mayor Bloomberg sent a congratulatory note to OCEF.
The concert was star-studded, featuring performances by New York Philharmonic principal oboist Wang Liang, renowned soprano Jiang Fangtao, and young pianist Zhang Haotian. The New York Salome Chamber Orchestra enchanted the audience by infusing the classical pieces with a modern twist. The concert was concluded with a beautiful chorus of the popular Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower by the musicians as well as the audience. The exceptional showmanship brought by the co-MCs, actor James Donahower and New York socialite Liang Zhouyang, added a unique flavor to the concert.
The auctions were conducted between the performances, showcasing such items as tennis shoes autographed by French Open champion Li Na; Olympic First Day Covers with autographed by Olympic champions Sun Yang, Ye Shiwen and Yi Siling; artworks by famed painters and photographers including Li Shihao, Gu Lin, Ma Qingxiong, Lin Haozong, and Tan Jialing; autographed books by Chen Zhongshi, Su Tong, Wang Anyi, Yan Geling, Kevin Tsai, and other accomplished writers; paintings by Li Yan, daughter of the Chinese celebrities Faye Wong and Li Yapeng; meal vouchers provided by Michelin-Starred Qingcheng Chinese Restaurant; and one-on-one opportunities with the world-renowned economist and Princeton University professor Zou Zhizhuang, New York Philharmonic principal oboist Wang Liang, and web celebrities. Bidding was vigorous as the guests competed to show their goodwill and support for the charity cause.
This concert was organized by the 13 board members of the New York Chapter of OCEF, and made possible by the collective efforts of many volunteers and donors. Special thanks go to the Pipa Magazine, the China Arts Foundation, and the Knights Investment Group for their sponsorships and other contributions to the successful culmination of the event.
